After approx 8 months from new, while doing repairs my exhaust would glow cherry red after 30 seconds of idling. After all the checks we found that the timing was too far advanced and no matter what was done we could not get it to retard even if we simulated the pot on the carb.
Where we are there seems to be a problem with the 250 and 450 burning valves.
I am in the process of building a CDI where I can ajust the timing.

you could be running it to lean just put a bigger jet in it and it will run it cooler. the un burnt fuel tkaes a ton of heat out with it
