Well, I've just returned from a fantastic weekend of riding that was put on by the Lameroo Apex club.
The "Mallee Earthmovers" event was riding around the local Lameroo area, with a lot of single track trails.
Day 1 Started started at Tucker Motorcycles on friday night, where I caught a lift with the guys from there. We piled all the camping equipment into the cars/utes, loaded the bikes up, and headed out to Lameroo, about 2 hours away.
Since it was teatime, a pitstop was needed at the Murray Bridge KFC. Which certainly hit the spot.
We arrived at the Lameroo campsite about an hour later, and it had been raining a fair bit for the hour of driving from Murray Bridge. This may not seem strange, but it is the middle of a drought around a lot of Australia, certainly including the Lameroo area.
Anyway, sure enough, it was raining at the campsite as well, and had been off and on for a while. It stopped a bit just after we signed in, so I thought I'd take the time to put the tent up.
Of course, as soon as I got the thing spread out on the ground, and started figuring out how to put it up, the rain started again, heavier then before! We ended up putting an instant shade thing up over the top of the tent while we got the dome poles into place, and of course, by then the rain had stopped, but not before getting quite thoroughly wet while trying to set it up.
Luckily, some other local blokes already had a fire burning, with mallee roots supplied by the Apex club. Standing right in front of this soon dried everything out ready for some yarns about past rides, future rides, just how many ktm bikes were present, and the joy of electric start systems.
Around 8:30, there was a fantastic "BOOM", and a huge firework rocket was launched a few hundred meters into the air, with a huge scattering of small fireworks coming out at the peak.
This performance was repeated a couple of more times in the next half hour or so, ensuring that everybody was aware that there was fun to be had!
However, stumps were pulled pretty early on Friday night, as the riding was supposed to start at 8:00 on Saturday morning, and despite it NOT being a race as such, everybody was already planning their run to the first corner
Day 2 Started at around 6am when some other blokes voice woke me up. Seems he had a very long tale to tell someone, and of course, a tent isn't very soundproof, and he must have woken half the camp. Oh well, at least there was nobody snoring near the tent
Breakfast was the first of all the meals supplied by the Apex club over the weekend, and it started out pretty good, with toast, cereal, fruit, good breakfast fare all there ready for us to munch on.
After eating a bit, we all went back to out tents/cars/utes/etc and geared up, ready for the days ride.
We all took off and straight into some sandy single track trails, which were quite tight. A few riders camp to grief in this early section, before they "got their eye in", including on block who smashed his wrist a little within 30 minutes of the start. Unfortunately, that was the end of his weekend.
The trails continued on for quite a while, before we met up with the Apex club's morning tea stop, where everybody took a well deserved break, and filled up with fuel, snakes and water as required.
More to Come
