The 24 May 2009 was the date for the 4th round of the 2009 MX Nationals held up at the Gum Valley track located near Koumala, south of Mackay, Queensland.
I packed my gear bag and again headed north to race my Vision Motorsport’s KTM 250 SXF in the Pro Lite class, the second weekend in a row in Queensland.
The Gun Valley Club and Williams Event Management prepared an excellent track that looked fantastic and was great to ride.
The track is located in a sugar cane area and the sandy loamy
surface shaped up well as the racing went on. The weather was warm and a large crowd came out to watch us race.
I had a good days racing with a 15th place in Race 1, a 14th place
in Race 2 to get 14th overall on the day and I now sit in 15th place in the series overall.
It was a challenging track that saw me move up in the placings in Race 1 after I was closed out in the first corner and was way back in around 30th place but slipped 4 places backwards in Race 2 after a much better start. Strange but with no time on the bike because of my usual work commitments and trade school exams I was comfortable with my placing.
The track layout at Mackay meant that I was able to watch a lot more of the other class’s race which was good. There were some good battles between riders both in the top 3 and further back in the placings and the crowd obviously enjoyed the racing.
The results of the MX Nationals can be found on www.ozmotox.com.au and included again Matt Moss (Shift Motul Suzuki) in 1st place in the Pro Lites, Cheyne Boyd (CDR Yamaha) in 1st place in the Pro Open and again Harley Quinlan (Yamaha) in 1st place in the Under 19’s.
I should thank the KTM Motorex Race Team for transporting my bike and gear to Toowoomba and then Mackay which meant I could fly in and as usual I better mention Adrian Salmon my Team Manager and Mechanic who prepared my bike for me and as always it went great with no problems.
Whilst I was up in the sun in Queensland, Luke Smith was out racing and practicing in Victoria and placed on the podium in all three of the race classes entered on his Vision Motorsports KTM’s over the weekend. An excellent result.
My next race is the 2nd round of the 2009 Victorian Senior State
Motocross Titles at Ballarat on the Victorian Queens Birthday
weekend on 6-8 June 2009 and then it’s off on the following
weekend to Murray Bridge in South Australia for the 5th round of the 2009 MX Nationals.
Luke will be racing the 2nd round of the 2009 Victorian Junior
State Motocross Titles at Rosebud, much closer to home.
