Dualsport tires

By sdk105, 4 January, 2004

Looking for a good off road tire. (If that is possible for DOT.) I have 2002 drz400s. My first set of tires was a Dunlop D606 rear and 905F front. What I have learned in 3 1/2 years of riding is this. These tires are good for hard dirt and thats about it. When it comes wet or muddy condition they suck!! They don't release mud. Any help would save me another 2 years of riding on bad tires.

DOT

I've tried a couple of other DOT brands. The WRF's in Australia come with Michelins. Comp III on the Front, and the Endurostart (maybe) on the rear. The rear sucked hugely in mud, and in fact in pretty much everything I rode it in. The front is ok, although I'm told that its very "stiff", and thus not good for much except hardpack.

I recently had my suspension done, and the guy recommended a M12 rather than the Comp III for the front, as its softer, and will get more grip. Trouble is, its not DOT.

I've also tried Pirelli MT18 front and rear, which are DOT, and I thought the rear was quite good, but I wasn't that impressed with the front.

I swapped the front for a Michelin Comp IV, which I thought was better than the MT18.

Recently, I've been using Kenda Trackmasters on the rear. They are DOT, wear well, and hook up pretty well also.

Next, I may try a Kenda front or the M12.

My philisophy is if i'm not happy with it, try something different, at least that way you'll be able to tell if its better/worse than your currrent setup.

Department Of Transport I bel

Department Of Transport I believe.

Most non-DOT tyres (all i've seen) say "Not Highway Safe" on them.

tyre selection

Give the michelin ac10 a try [DOT approved]. I ride 50/50 dirt/road.
I put em on my drz400e and find them pretty good.
Ths s12's are the go but dissapear TOO fast for my budget.
