it all depends do you plan to race? or do you plan to ride off road? if you plan to race i would get a 2 stroke but if you plan to ride off road get a 4 stroke but whatever you choose get a honda they outlast any other dirtbikes out there i have a 1977 honda xl 75 4 stroke and it still runs like a charm

If you like dull linear power delivery, sounding like you ate a hot curry the night before, or pulling wheelies and can afford new or nearly new then buy a 4 stroke. But real men (or cool chicks!) ride two strokes!

So how often do you have to overhaul a 2 stroke if you race? My son, 10, is getting into racing. We are looking for a bike around the size of a YZ 85 or bigger. Our hang up is deciding whether to go with 2 or 4 stroke. Any suggestions? This kid currently has a CR80 and has no fear of a track.
i believe that the 4 stroke bikes outlast the 2 strokes. these 2 strokes will need some good maintence before they shit out on you. 4 stokes just last longer. I feel that 4 stroke is the way to go, and that the market is heading their way. i wont be surprised if you see more 4 stroke bikes in the future
Yes 2 strokes have advantages that 4 strokes don't have and vice versa, but each individual is different. I think it all depends on which suits the rider best. I think as long as you look after the bike it should last you for a while regardless.
2 strokes dont always require more maintnence it depends on how you ride and how you take care of the motor, i have a 1986 Kawasaki Tecate motor with the stock top end(same as 85-6 KX250 motor)because i always ran 16:1 premix so it gets a lot of lube and i generally dont beat on the motor a whole lot, versus i have a 1989 CR500 ive replaced the top end on several times cuz i run 50:1, so it revs quicker but gets less lube, and because its in a dirtbike, its pinned 99% of the time......4 strokes you should change the oil religously after a weekend of riding ( i do every long ride) and you have to keep the valves correct, and they get annoying to keep on adjusting every month or so....
2 strokes are generally better for MX and play riding and definately better for jumping and freestyle, where as a 4 stroker is a better trail bike, enduro bike,super motard, and things that require tght turns, i personally prfera 2 stroke in any condition any type of riding and dislike 4 strokes, but im not gunna side with one thing and say the other sucks jus because of my preference for how and where i ride,
