AVALON HOSTS SPECTACULAR SUPERCROSS
A bumper crowd of at least 8,000 saw Australian Supercross riders Jay
Marmont and Troy Carroll dominate their respective classes in Round Two of
the 2003 Australian Supercross Championship at Avalon Speedway near
Geelong last night.
First-time Supercross Promoter, Full Throttle Sports, ensured the event
was a success, with plenty of entertainment for the crowd and an excellent
Supercross track with challenging jumps and turns. Rain clouds stayed
away, though a chilly breeze which sprung up as the night wore on ensured
jackets and jumpers were well utilised.
In the 125cc class, Troy Carroll continued his form from Round 1 (Gosford,
January 25) by completely blitzing the opposition all night. Daniel McCoy
took second overall while Jye Harvey managed to finish ahead of Mitchell
Hoad for third overall.
In the final lap of the last 250cc Open race, Jay Marmont gave the crowd
something to talk about on the way home to Geelong, Melbourne or wherever
they had come from ? a spectacular, mid-air cart wheeling fall which would
have made even the most skilled gymnast nervous. Marmont picked himself
up and finished the race much to the crowd?s delight, thoroughly earning
his Round 2 win after missing out on first place by the barest of margins
in Round 1.
Geelong?s Troy Dorron was cheered on by the crowd all night and ended up
second with Lee Hogan in third. Unfortunately Shane Metcalfe, winner of
Round 1 at Gosford, had a fall earlier in the night and did not take part
in the final race.
