I have a 1998 Honda Xr100 that I bought for my son for his fisrt dirt bike. It has a WhiteBrothers 4-stroke pipe on it and for the life of me I can't get it to run. It starts and idles fine but when I put a load on it it spits, sputters and chokes out. The spark plug is as black as nite. Iv'e come to the conclusion that it's running rich. Everything that I have done jets, big and small just isn't getting it done. Does ANYONE have an answer to help me out before I spend $300.00 at the shop?

XR 100
2Wheels, Thanks for the reply. Heres my trouble. I bought the 100 the way it stands. The problem is that it's running too rich. I just don't know why. I do believe that it's the float being out of adjustment. It had a 102.5 main jet when I took it apart the first time. I thought it wasn't getting enough fuel. So I went bigger. Not good. So now I'm at a 98. It runs better but still it's too rich.Thats where my trouble is. I had ordered a manuell for it but of couse it's back ordered. Should have gotten one from Ebay.
Dan
when u say to rich do u mean
when u say to rich do u mean to much fuel.is so put a retrictor in the fuel line if u cant get any smaller jets.

Yes the bike is running too rich. It smells like gas when I run it and also the plug is like coal. But again I think the float is out of adjustment. The bike runs fairly well with the 98 jet but still is not 100%
So if you think that is the p

xr100 problems
you are probably right the float is most likely stuck. but this same thing happened to my friends bike before and what we did was we kicked it over and started it up, and waited untill it stalled, then brought it to the top of a hill, turned the gas off, and pop started it, and beat the piss out of it untill it ran out of fuel, then we turned the fuel back on and it started right up and never had that problem again. if this doesnt work for you, i would take apart the carb, and clean it up. sorry if this doesnt work.
All The Thanks But.....
Gentalmen, All the world of thanks for ALL the input on the help I received. But....I finally broke down and took it to the Honda dealer. For three weeks straight I was working on this thing every night after work and with all the help and everything I had done it still wasn't right.
Up jets down jets, adjusting the carb and floats nine ways to sunday, cleaning it blah, blah, blah....So I got a call from Honda. They said it's just air fuel mixture adjustment, moving the needle around and bam she 90% there. They are almost done so some new rubber and finished.
Funny, I did those tings too and I must suck at it. Thanks to all who tried to help me. I'm sure my son will be happy too. Nice to know that there are still good people out there!!!!
not enough air if you ever
not enough air
if you ever get the chance look at a oxy -acetlene torch set up
turn it on with out the air and youll see nothing but black soot (because there is no air)
result= too much fuel/ no air
hope this helps every one
this is one of the easiest ways i know of to explain with seeing visble results
