Short wins second AMA Supercross Lites main event of the season

SAN DIEGO (February 11, 2006) – Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., wins a thrilling Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series main event tonight at Qualcomm Stadium before a near-capacity crowd of 69,005. Honda’s Andrew Short, of Murrieta, Calif., was the Western Region AMA Supercross Lites winner.

Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., grabbed the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap feature, with Stewart settling in behind him to set up a two-rider battle at the front. Carmichael held the slightest of leads the entire race as Stewart patiently waited just a few bike lengths back. Stewart finally made his move on the second to last lap with an inside pass on Carmichael in a 180-degree turn after the first triple jump. Stewart held off Carmichael’s last lap charge to pick up the win, his fifth of the season. Carmichael was second and Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., finished third.

KTM’s reigning Enduro 3 world champion David Knight proved once again that when the going gets tough he certainly knows how to get going. Mounted on his 300cc KTM David once again dominated the Hell’s Gate race earning himself 8’000 Euro after managing to make it to the top of Hell’s peak ahead of his rivals.

Despite the special test used in the morning’s qualifying enduro featuring several ice patches David managed to win each of the three special tests to qualify first for the main Hell’s Gate race. Finishing ahead of Britain’s Wayne Braybrook and Italian Maurizio Micheluz, Knighter simply did enough to ensure he would start in pole position for the four-lap main event. While David claimed the number one qualifying position, KTM’s Dakar rider David Casteu finished in 10th position, putting himself in a strong position for a good result in the Hell’s Gate race.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (February 9, 2006) – AMA Pro Racing lost one of its own on Wednesday morning, Feb. 8, when professional motocross racer Kevin Crine was killed in an auto accident near the tiny village of McKendree, Md. He was 32.

Crine was a regular in AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross Championships. His highest career national ranking was 14th in the AMA 250cc Motocross Championship in 1995. Crine also rode as a KTM factory rider in the mid-1990s. In addition, he competed in AMA Arenacross and was a leading rider in the ADAC Cup Supercross Series in Germany.

Crine turned pro in 1992 and competed in the AMA 125 East Supercross and AMA 125 Motocross Championship his rookie season. His career progressed and he earned a national number in 1994 and held a national number through 2002.

It all comes down to one weekend, two racers, two main events – one champion. Yamaha-backed Chad Johnson, who’s led the points chase up to this past weekend in Memphis, is tied with first-year Toyota AMA National Arenacross Series racer (though no rookie) Brock Sellards. In a never-before-occurring feat in AMA Arenacross (formerly 250cc class) history, both racers are entering the final event tied at 375 points. Denver’s Coliseum, located in the heart of action sports central, will no doubt go off this weekend as the two top-flight motocross racers go all out in this fan-friendly microwave version of Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross.
