How long do you keep a bike?
I have had a 94 KTM 300 EXC since I purchaced it new. It has only been used for the rugged rocky cactus infested desert offered in Arizona. The bike has been very versatle on both single trac and open desert. I have added ample protection such as skid plate pipe gaurds shark fin, front disc gaurd. All Plastic has been replaced as nessacary. The motor, suspension has been meticulosly maintained. I have ridden quite a few of the newer model bikes to use as a comparison, even though the bike is going on ten years old. When it comes to the desert. I am still smoking a lot of the younger kids on newer bikes. While my experence will take me alot further than a new bike. I still find it hard to justify plunking down 7000k for a new bike. I would say if you can still keep up and stay in your comfort zone. Keep it as long as you can. If your into moto or or dancing too Techno get the glitter.
what broken bones?
Fortunately I haven't broken any bones. There must be others out there too in this position. I guess I'm not as brave and don't take as many chances.

Exhaust noise.
I am a dedicated Trail/Adventure/enduro rider. And I wonder why it is that the vast majority of riders insist on spending large summs of money to replace the standard muffler on their late model dirt bikes? Late model bikes make great power, have good throttle response and are acceptably quiet and light enough for the majority.
In most cases a dialed in after market muffler will offer a modest increase in HP (usually at high rpm where most riders can't use it effectively), and maybe save a kilo or so, for trail riding...big deal.
Most riders I come across are what I would rate as 'average' and in no way capable of exceeding the potential of a dialed in STD machine. But these riders seem the most compelled to pipe thier bikes.
I was impressed that at the 2003 4day a large percentage of these expert riders used STD exhausts, even WR's. Good on them.
However the 'average' riders (especially WR riders it seems) insist on modifying the exhaust (often without sorting the jetting properly) when they should be learning how to pick a decent line, weight the pegs, use the clutch, brake and so on.
Most riders are dreaming when they pipe a 525 or a WR450.
A simple fact is in the trail riding world, noise is our biggest enemy (followed closely by lack of rego....don't start me, and guys that ride around in circles in an area).
If no one can hear you having a ball then there are fewer problems and closeures.
From my point of view it feels good to be able to 'stealth' a piped rider.
KTM are selling bikes that are both quiet and powerful with no power sacrifices needed in STD form.
Get on one!

Why are people are so insistent on having noisy pipes?
Ditch em, and go back to stock & quiet!

i think that a good pipe on a 4 stroke makes it heaps better but not on a 2 stroke because there alot louder and the sound is alot more annoying
yeah i agree good pipes on fo
yeah i agree good pipes on fours make them sound heaps more strong and grunty while on 2s it makes then more noisy but it lets the gases out faster which gives you more horsepower

Honda Rules?
I gotta admit, I was a Honda devotee before I bought the WRF. I wish i could say that Honda now had a competitior to the WRF available, but AFAIK, you still (3 years and counting) cant get a CRF250X :jawdrop:.
KX250F
Well, the KX250F must be a bit of a rocket, but then again, Paul Broomfield is freaky.
Check this story: http://www.fullnoise.com.au/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=display_full&news… and the results at the bottom, Broomfield rode a 250F against 250 two strokes and came out second!
An excellent result for the Green Machine.
yea rite fag
honda and kawasaki both suck yamaha yz250f is the shit hands down
What I like about 4-Strokes
I am an old fart now, 42 years old this year (2004.) Back when I was racing fulltime in pre-1984, I had a few bikes most all of the time. One year in particular I remember having an 84 CR125 and an 84 XR200. I bought the XR for a pit bike basically. One day the CR was not running right (blew it out during practice I guess) and when race time rolled around I was allowed to use my XR200. It was box stock. I ended up running faster laptimes though the lack of accelleration was what kept me from winning. I still trophied against all the KX, YZ RM and other CR's. I love the way a 4-stroke handles braking. You don't even need brakes and you are practically always in the right gear. I wish 4-stroke technology would have been there when I was racing. There is no way I would have raced anything else.
WANNA RACE
MY CRF250x will stomp your wr bud.
That may be
But I've had over 5000km/s and a year and a half of riding on it.
After they get the bugs Ironed out, it will be tough to choose between the CRF and the WRF now ;-(
Good to see they are finally available to the public!!!
Go Honda!!
(OOps, I slipped)
WR 250F
out of all of the bikes listed i would prefer the wr 250f. all other bikes you a restricted to the tracks unless you pay another 1000 bucks to get it recreationly registered. the wr can be set up for both on track and trail riding, it is the best all round bike. yamaha made a good move when they brought the 4 stroke enduro comp bikes out.
kx 250 are better hondas suck
