I'm buying a 1984 XL600r this weekend and i was wondering was there anything major that happens with the motors in the 84's or anything else with the whole bike.
Yeah nice i have had mine for 5 years but i would be lying if i said nothin has gone wrong.
You might be alright but do check that the bit on the end of the clutch pushrod on the left of the engine is not worn too much as this wreeked havoc on my motor by breaking up thus making the pushrod oscillate and snap every 2-3 months and the swarf entered the mainshaft bearing which knackered that and things just got worse.
Goes great now though after fitting a wiesco 2.4mm oversize piston with 11:1 compression ratio, holey airbox and jetted to suit.
I will never let it die.

with the old bikes you need to check over the whole motor just to see if anything has worn or broken if so i would replace it straight away.
hope the bike goes well and have fun ridin !!!
