I Guess you could but

When you learnt to drive, did you learn on a race car? The YZ & WR250F are both very competitive race bikes (once de-restricted), and not really ideal for learing on. The motors are not really happy puttering around.

I'd try to find a friend or park or somewhere that has a CRF150 or TTR125 to learn the gears on. If you take to that well, then you might get a 250F.

Try it and see is the best bet.

YZ 250F not for a rookie

For a starter bike I agree with Simon... I might go with a TTR125. One of my bikes is a 250F and I'm a 6fter/ 200lbs. This bike will getty up and go and operates best when pushed not "babysat". Start on something else then migrate to the 250F when you can use all the power. I have always had more fun on a bike that I could ride wide open versus one that I could only putt around on. The TTR will set you up nice for the 250 when you are ready.

Don't listen to these guys

Get the bike and just take your time. I just had my buddy buy a 400f to learn on. He takes his time and has a great time. He's no racer but he has a bike that he's happy with and will be able to grow with it.

lessons

In addition to starting on the right bike to begin with (as suggested a TTR 125 or CRF 150), it is important to get COMPETENT instruction. You will save time learning, won't be stuck with bad habits that ultimately will come back to injure you, and you will have more fun because you will progress more rapidly and then be able to keep up with you buddies more easily.

So get the right bike, take a lesson or three, and then REALLY have some fun. You will never regret it!

I learn't on a 97 cr250 and f

I learn't on a 97 cr250 and fuck did i learn fast i came of it all the time but nothing too full on. Then i blew it up and fucked around rebuilding it and cleaning it up then i finally sold her to my mate.
My hunger for another dirtbike was beconing so after careful consideration i settled with the yz250f, after coming off the ridgid and aggresive aluminium frame, as well as shithouse suspension onto a smooth handling, torquey toy. i say toy because that is how easy and versitile a 250f is it opened me up to a whole new level of riding. My riding has progressed in leaps and bounds. Im 6 ft and 80kg.
so if u want to be able to ride a race bike i found it good for me to start on one because you develope a different style then just riding trail bikes.

go for it

buy one cheap enough (but nice) and if you can't get the hang of it, sell it (the cheap price you bought it for...or more for profit!) and get a ttr. it may be small for you, but it's a good bike to learn on. that or maybe the bigger ttr (not the 225, ugh) the enduro one...is that a 250? They aren't popular though...but thats a good line of bikes!

Hell Yes you can learn!!

I always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. I felt like you--it seems complicated--not. The most important thing is a patient teacher who does not yell at you and make you feel like a moron. The first bike I tried was a street bike in the late 80's. I believe it was a yamaha. I crashed broke my brothers friends bike tail light and my brother yelled at me so much I never tried again. Still wanted to learn. My husband bought a suzuki rm250 for himself and an Rm 80 for my daughter. I was deadly afraid because now Im old. My nephew taught me on my daughters 80 in my back yard. I still crashed, but thats part of the game. With in 10 mins, I was riding round and round. I was totally stoked. Now I have my own bike and love to go riding to Gorman in Hungary Valley, CA----The dirt and street are 2 different things. I still crash but thats because I am ripping the bike up and pushing the limits--all part of the game. So If and old dog like me can learn--anyone can!!! Remember Balls Out!!
