do you mean timing your valves or ignition?? and dont you mean 0.040 over 0.004 is barely anything the end gap on a set of rings is more than that lol but thats ok. if its youre valves there should be marks on the sprockets and you just line them suckers up and put the chain on and away you go if its ignition there should be marks on the stator plate and you line the mark up with one on the crank case or sumwhere else then make sure you dont move it when you tightening the screws

make sure the marks on the other side are lined up then put the chain on i should be all set???
I can't seem to get the thing started after doing the top end
I started at tdc and lined up the timing amks at the end of the
l---l l and i'm not sure what to do next. does the air box and evrything thing else need to be put together and bolted tighight for the thing to fire. I some times get a backfire from the carb or exaust I've had the thing apart many times going tooth by tooth in both diriections and can't get the right results what's next HELP!!!!
if the top end was really really bad before you changed it it could be the air screw. but only if u adjusted it before you rebuilt. but i guess it could still be but thats what i would guess next.
tore it down and found a valve that wasn't seating so took it to the shop for a new one thanks. We'll see what hapens next this was supposed to be a three or four hour project that turned into a nightmare
