I recently rode a 2003 WR250F at a local MX park in some trails that had all the restrictors still intact and it was the slowest dog I ever threw a leg over, (And I'm not a fast rider by any means). I currently use a Kawasaki KDX200 for all of my trail riding and have been really happy with it's capability and forgiving nature. But I recently purchased a 2003 YZ125 and found the bike to be the best built, most fun and forgiving bike I've ever ridden. So naturally I thought of swapping the KDX out for the new 2004 WR250F. And since I'm a small guy, the 250 size seems perfect. But I am concerned about that first test-ride I took on that stock piece of driftwood with the WR stickers on it.
Has anyone purchased a new 2004 WR250F and removed the restrictors? Can you give me an idea of just how big a difference it made in performance over the stock setup? Because, honestly, unless it makes a huge difference, I can't see plunking down $5800 on one to replace my KDX.

There is lots of great information about the thumpers here:

new 2004 WR250F
Got one early January 04.
Sluggish in stock form. A little disappointed with that.
I should've opted for CRF450R or YZ250 2 stroke.
Removing baffle opens it up a little. Haven't ridden alot, 50 miles.
Will do throttle stop mod next, then airbox. I don't really like
the wide ratio / long powerband, I prefer more snap.
Remember, 250 is like 125, 450 more like 250 2-stroke.
Do yourself a favor, if you opt for WR, go with 450.
to the dumbass who thinks the wr250f is slow
first off you stupid shit its the fastest trail bike made, second you obviously have no idea what your talking about, kawi's suck especially the kdx two strokers. the wr250f can't even compare to the yz125 cuase their designed differently. ones enduro ones mx. you must be a stupid fuck becuase you say your short and the 250 is a good size for you. well wake up dumbass the wr250f and the yz125 have the highest seat hights even out of the upper class 450's. why dont you think or kill yourself before you say another stupid ass thing like that.
wr250f
i am about to buy one and will let u know how it runs for trails and how it is racing
What's your problem?
Dude, this is an open forum for people to discuss various topics about bikes. With that being said, are you like 12 years old or something? There is no reason for your language or attitude. If you'll read the latest Dirt Rider they review the WR250 and 450 and make a very clear statement that in stock form, they are both extremely slow. I repeat IN STOCK FORM! The WR250 I rode recently was in completely stock form and I would have to agree with the pros in the article. (Unless of course, you ride a WR250 in an area where the laws of physics work completely different than the rest of the free world!).
I understand the mods make a considerable difference. My original question to the forum was how big of a difference does it make and does it warrant switching over to the WR from the KDX. And if you'll read my original post carefully, you'll see I don't compare the WR to the YZ, but I mention how happy I am with the YZ and this has made me consider switching brands in the trail bike area as well. I am well aware of the difference between MX and Enduro. I have been racing Enduros for many yearsand have owned dozens of bikes, both MX and Enduro. And if you'll also read my original post you'll see I never said I was short. I said I was small. I am 5'10" but I'm a thin guy. Therefore, I like a narrow nible bike, which the YZ125 and WR250 both are.
Maybe you should spend more time reading someone's original posted message instead of just flaming the psoter and showing such a lack of respect for a fellow dirt biker.
why is evryone going 2 a 4 stroke
howmany guys hear have gone from a 2t to a 4t?
There was a poll
We did a poll not too long ago, and 4 strokes won, but not by much. See here http://www.dirtbike.ws/drupal/node/view/1769 for the results.
For me, the problem with 2 strokes is premix. That makes it a pain when refueling on a trail ride.
you should get it
I have a 2003 WR and I took out the air box baffle, inserted a YZ throttle stop, cut the gray wire, inserted a G-Y-T-R exhaust baffle($40), and put a exhaust hot cam in it($90). It tops out at 85 MPH and smokes a stock banshee. And before you get one get new handle bars because the bend really easy. If you want to, I would, but get handle guards it saves you hand in the tight trails. The conclusion is you better get one before your friends get one.
250f
i own a new wr250f, and apart from a 400$ exhaust have only done free mods. i have owned xrs and a kdx before, and have riden many other thumpers. dont be fooled by the choked stock wrf - one night in the shed will have it at least twice as fast as a kdx, thats for sure. and as for having to get the 426.....i rode both the 250 and 426 and since u r small like me it sounds as if getting the 250 would in fact doing urself a favour. unless your 200kgs then you will be able to ride the 250f better. the 426 is for straight line heros. have a good one
hey guys okay i just got my b
hey guys okay i just got my bike and i was learning yesterday, but i want to know if anyone lives in Wisconsin and roughly around milwaukee cuz im gettin tired of riding by myself!!
Wheelies
The 426/450 is also excellent for wheelies! ;-)
your going to race it?? you s
your going to race it?? you should consider a billy cart or similar, i would rather watch you maim yourself on the billycart than try and race that
2004 wr450
I just purchased the wr450 2004 and the first thing you need to do to add more power is remove the throttle stop. when you purchse the bike stock you only get about 1/4 of the throttle so you need to remove the throttle stop and cut off about 8mm and then put in the insert in the exhaust. there is also a grey wire under the seat that you can disconnect for more rpm's.
it's a great bike, after you make some changes to it.
wrf
they go great on a race track but the suspetion needs some work.
because they fly.
because they fly.
air box
you can also take some restriction out of the air box. under the seat by the battery you can remove the air box sleeve by hitting it with a hammer. remove air cleaner first.
wr 250f. should i buy??? ANSWER
hi im 15 and i have a 2001 WR250f. i would buy this bike over any of the 4-stroke trail bikes. it has no restrictions on it. this bike will stand up in 4th gear. it is a very powerful bike. i strongly reccommend
WR250 and the WR450
The WR250 and the WR450 are NOT SLOW!
2004 wr250f great riding bike
I picked up my WR back in sept. 04 and i love it its a great bike.
I've rode my '03 yz125 alot longer than my WR and it doesnt compare to the YZ but i dont think it can because its a trail bike not a MX bike. I have done the mods; the little gray wire, airbox, and throttle screw. I can say that the WR250f is hard bike to beat it has ample power and is unstopable on the trails in good hands. To close all i have to say is Honda ya'll have a lot to do to beat this WR.
NNNNOOOOOOO!!!
BUY A HONDA, HONDA IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have a wr250f and it's grea
i have a wr250f and it's great it handles well and the power is awsome it has a yzf mufler ans has made a huge diffarance. a mate has a kdx 200 and the wrf has way more power than it and is a way better bike allround.
