Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory, there I was and I did not see Kevin Rudd. Where was the Prime Minister? I was expecting him to be there to see us race and at least sing the National Anthem.
Well he missed two days of great racing and a lot of people came out to watch us. Maybe Kevin was in his casual gear watching from the sidelines. I hope he was!
Yes I was there for Round 2 of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championships Pro Lite class and as the event included qualifying for the 15 – U18 250cc 4 stroke class for the Australian Team for the FIM World Junior Motocross Championships to be held in Taupo New Zealand my team mate Luke Smith was there as well, both of us on our Vision Motorsport KTM 250 SXF’s.
This was the first outing for Luke and I as Vision Motorsport / www.taylorpotterracing.com and it was a good weekend of racing.
The track looked fantastic and the whole event had a bit of a slick feeling about it with the pit area well set up and the spectators checking out the racing and the behind the scenes areas.
For me it was practice and qualifying on Saturday, racing on Sunday. Luke had to practice, qualify and race one race on Saturday and then have two more races on Sunday.
Luke was out there first and he qualified in 13th place in his class against Australia’s best junior riders. I was next and I had a good practice session and qualified in 10th place, my best ever result in qualifying in the MX Nationals.
Luke had mixed fortunes with a big off in the first race resulting in a disappointing 16th place to a great 8th place in the last race to give him a 12th overall. It was interesting watching the pace of the 15 yo Juniors as their lap times were very competitive and for Luke it gave him a chance to see how he compared with the other riders from across Australia and to see how much speed you need to be
competitive as a senior.
After my Saturday qualifying I was very happy with my performance and was keen to hit the track for my racing. However on Sunday, well over 20 hours later, I had a poor first race with an 18th place finish. I think the wait had got to me but a much better second race with a 13th place finish to
give me 15th place overall on the day and into 16th place in the Championship.
Adrian Salmon, our Manager and Vision Motorsport / www.taylorpotterracing.com Team Manager had both of our Vision Motorsport KTM 250 SXF’s running really well. Between Adrian, Dad, Mum and Luke’s dad doing a million things we had a busy time in the pits and overall a successful
race meeting.
Some of the memorable quotes:
“I’m stuuuuuuuuuuufffffffeeeeeedddddd!” Luke, after the third race.
“Does a Top 10 qualifying mean that Adrian has to buy Maca’s?” Taylor.
“Err what? I don’t think I brought my wallet, the Visa is smoking, there isn’t a Macas in Canberra is there, Umm.” Adrian.
I have to thank my sponsors including KTM Australia, Vision Motorsport Ferntree Gully, Car City Ringwood, Travisty clothing, Fox, Alpine Star, Tag, Scott, Motul, JT Sprockets, RK Chains, Bridgestone, Braking, One Industries, KroozTune, Hydralyte, Business Performance International,
Ringmaster Images and Vortex Ignitions. For Luke the list is pretty well the same.
My next race is the first round of the 2009 Victorian Senior MC Titles at Broadford where I will race both the Lite and Open class and Luke heads off to the 2009 Victorian Junior MX Titles at Ararat on three bikes, his Vision Motorsports 85SX, 125Sx and 250SXF.
Keep up to date with our racing at http://www.taylorpotterracing.com/
