i asked my local dealership and he said evrytime u start it gets easier and easier and when u kick it keep it as low as, as u can kick it and let it just sit for 5 to 10 min u should have no problems after that
disasembel the carb. Clean all jets and ports. always have clean air filter "do not over oil the airfilter" Most 4 strokes have thier own starting ritual, try kicking just ahead of TDC throttle 1/4 turn.
You have Dirt In you needle and seat, or a misadjusted or bad float. I know carbs and can fix your problem if you can't. I own a shop and have been doing business for over 25 years.
I have owned a TTR125 & loved every minute of it. I have since traded up to the CRF230 with electric start & love it even more. But back to the TTR125 hard starting problem. I used to call mine a cold cow. So I drilled the airbox cover, bought a bigger pilot & main jet, played with the air screw until I got the mixture right. Bingo! I never had another starting problem.
I have owned a TTR125 and what a great bike it was. I have since upgraded to a CRF230 with electric start - even better! But back to the TTR125. I used to call mine a cold cow. It needs the airbox to be drilled, the gauze from the carby side of the air filter removed, a bigger main & pilot jet. Then play with the air screw until the mixture is right. I never had another problem starting it after I did all that.
ALL OF YA COMMENTING , SHIT , FILL GAS TANK WITH FRESH FUEL , ADD FUEL STABILIZER TO GAS , TURN OFF FUEL VALVE , FIND THE DRAIN SCREW ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CARB , OPEN IT AND DRAIN THE GAS OUT OF THE CARB. TURN ON CHOKE START ENGINE TO GET THE LAST OF THE FUEL OUT OF THE CARB . WHEN YOU GO BACK TO START IN A FEW DAYS YOU WILL HAVE FRESH FUEL GOING INTO THE CARB WHEN YOU TURN THE VALVE ON . OUR FUEL QUALITY SUCKS RIGHT NOW , GAS IN CARB WILL TURN YELLOW IN JUST A FEW DAYS IN THE CARB AND WILL FOUL THE SPARK PLUG . MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD PLUG , VALVES ARE ADJUSTED PROPERLY , AIR FILTER IS CLEANED AND LUBED , FUEL MIXTURE IS SET . IT SHOULD START IN JUST A FEW KICKS , DO NOT LEAVE CHOKE ON TOO LONG WHEN WARMING UP OR YOU'LL FOUL PLUG . READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL ! FOLLOW MAINTENANCE GUIDS. PEACE-WOODY
question for the cr500 owner. i am just getting back into riding after back surgery 2 years ago from an accident. i have a neighbor that has lots of money and is very anal about everything he owns & takes very good care of his stuff. he wants to sell me his 89 cr500 for $300, good deal or what. it looks great and has it bored out(supposedly) to the til! good deal or what? i figured, hey$300 for any bike that runs is a good deal expecially one that looks as good as this one. he is also a wrench head so i know it was taken care of and probably does run the way he says it does,
TRY TO LEAN THE BIKE OVER TILL FUEL PEE'S OUT THE OVER FLOW TUBE. I HAVE BOTH 2 AND 4 STROKERS, THIS PROCEEDURE HAS BECOME HABIT. SOME TIMES YOU REALLY NEED TO GIVE A 4 STROKE A GOOD BOOT.
WHO EVER WROTE 4 STROKES SUCK, WHAT DO THEY SUCK ANYWAY?
So let me get this straight, my Puch Maxi moped will smoke a CRF450 just because it's a 2 stroke! Bring it on dude...
There was me thinking that it was more to do with engine development as per GP500 class racers, the new 4 strokers are smoking the 2 strokers.
I have just completed fitting a 800cc big bore kit to my '89 CR500. I made most of the bits myself as I have a hobby machine shop. It is mega awsome, bit vibey but pulls like a train! Wowee! Doesn't rev like it used to but who cares, have gone down to a 38 tooth rear sprocket as it's all it needs. This baby will out-drag anything this side of a top fueller!
I went one better, I have linked-up two CR500 lumps in a modified frame. I had to lengthen the frame to shoehorn them both in, but it was worth it. This bike is the fastest thing I have ridden, power wheelies on tarmac in every gear. I may post some pics of this beauty.
Can't see me for dust..............
The ttr 125 might have a hard time to start but it is a good running bike. I have had mine for about a year and it still runs good.I ride it about every day.
quote:
"its because ttr's suck all four strokes suck"
An absolute falsehood if there ever was one. The new breed of 4 strokes are better built, more technologically advanced, and in some cases lighter than their 2 stroke counterparts from the past. The TTR is a fine machine, as well as the latest YZ offerings from Yamaha. An engine only needs 3 things to run: Air, Fuel, and Spark, coincidentally, the 3 sides of the fire triangle. If your breathing, it is safe to assume air is present. Just make sure the air filter is clean, and the carb slide opens. Fuel is next. A stuck float, or clogged jet or primary circuit could cause problems, so always use fresh fuel, and if you are going to leave the bike sit for some time, add stabilizer to the tank, and run the float bowl dry at shutdown by turning off the petcock and idling until it stops. A good spark is necessary, change the plug at least once a riding season. NGK's Iridium line is a fine choice, and requires less voltage to fire it if temperatures go up, or the electricial system becomes marginal.
To make a blanket statement that all four strokes suck is just a display of your stupidity. But, I'll be very happy to roost you as I pass you, or seat bounce a 50 footer with my 4 stroke's torque while you look for a way to try to clear it. C'mon out and ride with me.. Don't forget to bring extra tearoff's- you are going to need them..
There is a clip on the main jet. Looks like a ring. There are three positions you can move it. Default is the middle. We adjusted ours and it made little difference. Check your idle speed after warming up with no choke. Coming from the factory we find sometimes they are adjusted incorrectly. you can actually go to WWW.YAMAHA-MOTOR.COM and get manuals and part drawings from this site on some bikes. The TTR125 is there, and the drawings are very detailed for ordering parts. Some people with slow response time (all of them in my opinion) can get a special jet that may help... PN 620-1423A-71-A0
Also, You must let this thing warm up on its own, do not rev it or anything because this will foul out the plug REALLY bad on these models. We bought ours brand new, wasn't use to this, trying giving it gas while choke was on to warm up faster. The plug was blacker than sh*t afterwards. It states in the manual no to do this. Kind of a joke, when I start it, I'm ready to ride, not sit for 10 minutes while it warms up...

It takes me 4-strokes
the only reason you like 2 strokes is because that how many hand jobs it take you to get off.
HARD STARTING TTR
TRY TO LEAN THE BIKE OVER TILL FUEL PEE'S OUT THE OVER FLOW TUBE. I HAVE BOTH 2 AND 4 STROKERS, THIS PROCEEDURE HAS BECOME HABIT. SOME TIMES YOU REALLY NEED TO GIVE A 4 STROKE A GOOD BOOT.
WHO EVER WROTE 4 STROKES SUCK, WHAT DO THEY SUCK ANYWAY?
Valves
Check the valves, they might need to be adjusted.
Valves
To get to the first question, that person should just have their valves checked, they might need adjusting.
