You can race stock but the first bits u should get is a good set of handlebars like renthal or pro tapers or tag. that's the main things. But I am going to get a fmf shorty slip on muffler for my bike asweel it is supposed to give u more bottom and mid range power what class/age group will u be in.

the things i did to my yz was to get a twinair filter, silencer(no pipe, it takes the bottom end power out) and a decent controls setup. i went with renthals and used a shorty style clutch lever, but thats just my preference
man u dont need special parts to race or go fast, all u need is to kno how to maitain ur bike good, oil , filter, tires, sprokets chain,
a race isnt about goin out and clearing every jump (even though its nice) but its all about constitance and starts, Turns and starts man thats where the time is made. Just because u have the fastest or nicest bike on the line doesnt mean u can beat a guy riding a bike twice as beat and twice as old as urs remember that shit.
i got a yz 85 06 model, and i have got everything down except i can't go in to 1st with out really reving it before it dies. so i pretty much pop a wheelie everytime i go. any tips on letting out the clutch easier. also when yor in a race and u come off a double and u got to turn a tight inside corner, do you recommend shifting down before u land and?
im 14 years old got about 6years riding experiance, yz85 was my first real race bike, i first raced the pw80- ttr 125 which SUCK!!!!!!! Now i finally have a descent bike with good excelleration! im about 5'11 150 pounds. i do know im a little big for an 85 but i didnt think i could handle a real 125, plus i got the big wheeles on them.
as far as 1st grear goes, on 2 strokes, you have to rev the engine to get more torque do you still have the stock exhaust system? the stock pipewith aftermarket silencer will take away some top end, but it will give you a slight advantage on the bottom end. otherwise, get a one or two tooth bigger rear sprocket, it will gear it down, but give you better bottom end power from the corners and acceleration thru the gears. if youre having a problem in the starts, try leaning forward more, get closer to the gas tank its all about positioning
as far as the doubles go, i used to downshift right after i landed, that way i could use the brakes rather than possibly over revving the engine.
