Hi - I am new to this site (just found it doing a general search) and I am thinking about buying a dirt bike. I havent owned a dirtbike before (although I have taken general motocycle course for my license) I am looking for a 125cc possibly to start out on, I didnt want to spend a ton on my first bike to get started maybe looking around to spend $1,500 - $2,000. Keep in mind I am tall at 6'6" and definitely want to be comfortable. I have been looking at Yamaha (YZ125), but I am sure there are a ton of options for me. I was oringally looking for a sportbike but now I am just looking for something I can use on the weekends in some dirt and I always loved dirtbikes.
Any suggestions or advice you could give to me would be greatly appreciated. I thank you all in advance for your help!

but i like yamaha's better... i had a honda
and a bunch of my guy friends have them and i think the yamaha performs better....
but maintenance is pretty good...
i ve got a ttr 230
i ve got a ttr 230 there a great all rounder bike. but i wouldn't recommend it for a 6 foot 35 year old man!!!! u will find it hard, realli hard 2 ride. im tall myself but being only 14. first off handlebars are way 2 low u find ur back cramming after long rides. foot pegs arent wide enough and make clickin up gears a BITCH!!!! realli i think u wil would waste ur money ur abilities will out grow it fast. realli u would wont to buy a wr250f or yz250f if ur gonna buy a bike might as well get 20 more cc .
kind regards
Moto Manic
nonnono thats way to much pow
nonnono thats way to much power, the very highist i would go would be the wr 250f DO NOT GET THE YZ250F DO NOT
i would get
If i started off on a new dirtbike i would at least get a 125 2 stroke honda or yamaha. They are pretty much the same but if i were you because you are such a big guy i would get a 250f yamaha or honda then cuz my friend just got a used one and that thing is easy to ride but its got alot of torque.
no casuse i think if he gets
no casuse i think if he gets a 125 two stroke it will to much power a handa or yamaha 230 will br perfict for him.
2 stroke 125 power?
2 stroke 125 power? yer they go hard but honestly there NOT THAT GUD!!! u go on about them as if only a pro could ride them far from the truth!!!! the ttr 230 would still b able to keep up with a 125. think about it??? if a 125 2 stroke goes as fast as a 250 fourstroke then the ttr 230 would b only a little bit off the pace without the extra 20cc... kind regards
moto manic
no the ttr-230 is NOT MENT FO
no the ttr-230 is NOT MENT FOR RACING the yz250f is ment for racing its not the size of the engine its how much fight it puts out ok for exzample the sx 65 versus the ttr90 o i guess the 90 is going to win cause it has more ccs no ur wrong the ttr230 doesnt put out nearly as much power compared to the 250f 4 stroke so its not just 20ccs trust me. the 250 puts out way more power per cc than the ttr 230 cause its ment to race . heres another exzample ttr-125 versus crf 150 the crf 150 is going to win right just because it has 25 more ccs right moto_manic WRONG ya the engine is a little bigger but the ttr125 puts out more power per cc than the 150 does thats why they race in the same class. moto_manic , believe me its not how u say just 20 ccs

i already knew that's why 2
i already knew that's why 2 stroke 125 and fourstroke 250s are in the same class: pro lites and as for ttr 125 faster than a crf 150 thats not wat u said in another forum topic. u can race ttr 230s but not in supercross or motocross.
re
The ttr 230 is fan cooled thats why that are slower than the 125 2 stroke
ya the 2 stroke can race the
ya the 2 stroke can race the 250 4 stroke because the 2 stroke puts out wiegh more power per cc than the 250. but that ttr 230 is a 4 stroke and exzactly u cant race it in super cross or motorcross why no its not just because of the 20 ccs its NOT MEANT FOR RACE ITS MENT FOR TAKE IT EASY TRAIL RIDING, and i never said the ttr 125 is faster than the crf 150 alls i said was that the ttr 125 puts out a little more power per cc than the crf 150, but thats why the150 has 25 ccs just to match the ttr125 i never said the ttr is faster just has a little more power per cc but it has less ccs, u say u can race the 230 which im sure u can but u cant do it in the supercross or motocross like u said, but wait a minute u can race a yz250f in that class or any other 250 four stroke(honda, ktm, suzieke, kawasaike) in the supercross or motocross but how u said it is that the ttr 230 is only 20ccs away so since it is only 20ccs away u might as well be able to race it wrong, if the ttr 230 put out the same amount of power that the 250 four stroke put out per cc than there would be some 230s on the track but u dont see any of em cause they dont put out near as much power as the 250 four stoke does per cc, so u cant say u might as well go to a 250 four stroke because its not jlust 20 ccs.
i no the ttr 230 wiull b fine

Fellas thanks alot of all of
Fellas thanks alot of all of your help, I didnt mean to start a riot! :) nah seriously I appreciate all of the feedback (unbeatable racer, honda rider 13, moto_maniac) good looking....I will definitely keep you guys posted. I went into my lock Yamaha dealer but they didnt have a ttr230 in stock for me to sit on....the sales rep said she would call me when they get on in, whihc should be in a couple of weeks.
to old to ride motocross!
your a bit old to ride races but if u want to recreational ride i'd get a ttr 230 or a ttr250. being 6'6 id get the 250 and put around before gouing into 4-6 gear. if you wanted to race u gotta start when your 3 like me!

the yz 85 more power that you
the yz 85 more power that you need in the sand.
get a 250f
get a yamaha yz 250f they have a smooth power delivery and they have a ton of power they arnt much heavier than a 125 either
yz 85
yz 85 for sure. i have a yz 125 and me and my frends(all them have 4 strokes)went to the sand hills and they all got stuck as soon as they went in and i was goin fine and my tire was absolutly shit bak then
Honda cr250r
I started on an old 1978 suzuki ds80 when i was 11 now im 12 and i have a yamaha YZ80 2 stroke an my DS80 was 2 stroke. Iv beenin the hospital 8 times from dirtbiking in 2 years but it was worth it. Im now an amature rider. I suggest a Honda CR250R just tune it dow a little. Its a great bike becuase you just tune it down when ur a beginner and tune it higher when u think uve got more experiance> So i would go with that OK :-) bye
